17 Bipartisan Governors Vow to Fight Climate Change—And President Trump | The Atlantic

Friday, September 14th, 2018

‘On Thursday, a bipartisan alliance of 17 governors announced a new set of policies aimed at combatting climate change and working around Trump-led rollbacks. They have promised to better manage natural land; to blunt the effect of solar-panel import tariffs; and to restrict the release of “short-lived climate pollutants,” gases like methane that can trap enormous amounts of heat in the atmosphere.’

‘But at Gov. Jerry Brown’s global climate summit this week, some of the world’s biggest companies are in the spotlight as partners in tackling global warming. The private sector has emerged as a growing player in the alliance of cities, states and other institutions pledging to uphold emissions cuts of the Paris climate agreement, which has been disavowed by President Trump.’

Committing to 100% renewables proves what we already know: It’s pointless to invest in fossil fuels | Los Angeles Times

Thursday, September 13th, 2018

‘Anyone who says we can’t meet the new goal of 60% renewable electricity by 2030 isn’t paying attention; California’s large utilities expect to hit the previous goal (50% by 2030) 10 years ahead of schedule. SB 100’s target of 100% carbon-free electricity by 2045 just reinforces the fact that investing in fossil-fueled power is no longer wise.’

Rise for Climate March, San Francisco

Tuesday, September 11th, 2018

San Francisco’s Rise for Climate march, part of an international day of climate events and estimated to be 30,000 strong, was led by large indigenous groups including many Native Americans, some who danced in ceremonial regalia, along with many other groups and individuals making up a diverse, musical, and creative crowd of all ages on the sunny Saturday before the upcoming San Francisco Climate Summit. The colorful event included a plethora of expressive signs, banners and even messaged tee shirts, many with various calls for Jerry Brown to stand up to big oil. A group called “Brown’s Last Chance” chanted “Jerry Brown – keep it in the ground, if you don’t do it we’ll shut it down”.

Rise for Climate, Stand Up to Big Oil

“Stand Up to Big Oil”

Excerpt:

“We are part of the Brown’s Last Chance campaign. We’re marching, we’ve got a message that Jerry Brown – if he wants to be a real climate leader – it’s not enough just to say we just got build up renewables or create energy efficiency. We have to keep fossil fuels in the ground. We have to start a just transition from all fossil fuel production, beginning with protecting the front line communities in California that are being poisoned by toxic neighborhood oil drilling right now. We need a 2500 foot setback, a health and safety buffer zone to protect those communities, and if Jerry won’t do that, after California scientists three years ago gave us the information that we needed that it needed to be done, then his legacy is of a failure to protect our communities, a failure of the climate – not leadership. That’s our message, this is Jerry Brown’s last chance.” ~ Kai Newkirk, part of the Brown’s Last Chance campaign.

WILL CALIFORNIA’S DIRTY OIL BUSINESS SOIL GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN’S CLIMATE LEGACY? | Newsweek

Saturday, September 8th, 2018

‘…To wit, while Brown warns often in speeches that one-third of the world’s oil reserves must remain untouched to avert climate catastrophe, the governor has not done much to keep California’s reserves in the ground. To the contrary: In 2011 Brown flagrantly axed two state regulators for holding drillers to account for their environmental infractions. In 2013, he inserted last-minute amendments into a bill to regulate hydraulic fracturing and acidizing — dissolving rock with toxic chemicals to access trapped oil. And while he managed to extend California’s greenhouse-gas trading market, cap-and-trade, as far out as 2030, he did so in collaboration with oil lobbyists, who saw many of their demands included in the bill.’
