Climate System “Getting Unhinged” as Massive Heat Wave Causes Record Melting of Greenland Ice Sheet | Democracy Now

Saturday, August 3rd, 2019

‘The massive heat dome that shattered all-time temperature records across much of Europe last week has settled in over Greenland, driving temperatures across the vast region to as much as 30 degrees Fahrenheit above normal. In July, Greenland’s ice sheet lost 197 billion tons of ice, the equivalent of around 80 million Olympic swimming pools. This comes as the World Meteorological Organization said Thursday that July was the warmest month in recorded human history. It followed the hottest June on record, as atmospheric carbon dioxide levels climbed to a record high of 415 parts per million earlier this year.’

Climate change: July ‘marginally’ warmest month on record | BBC

Saturday, August 3rd, 2019

‘A preliminary analysis of global temperature data for July suggests it may have “marginally” become the warmest month on record.

Europe’s Heat Wave, Fueled by Climate Change, Moves to Greenland | The New York Times

Saturday, August 3rd, 2019

‘…The hot air, which was trapped over Europe after traveling from northern Africa, lingered for about four days. It has since moved north over Greenland, causing the surface of the island’s vast ice sheet to melt at near-record levels.’

Climate Change Is Happening Too Fast for Animals to Adapt | Yale Environment 360

Thursday, August 1st, 2019

‘The speed of climate disruption is outstripping many animals’ capacity to adapt, according to a study that warns of a growing threat to even common species such as sparrows, magpies, and deer. Scientists behind the research described the results as “alarming” because they showed a dangerous lag between a human-driven shift in the seasons and behavioral changes in the natural world.’

Jay Inslee just wants to save the world from climate change | The Week

Thursday, August 1st, 2019

‘…And Inslee is absolutely right that climate change is by far the most important issue facing the next president. This isn’t some kooky obsession for weirdos. Worse, President Trump has made the United States (the largest historical emitter) a rogue nation on climate. Our participation is at least necessary to have a good chance of tackling this problem. Kudos to Jay Inslee for trying to save America and human society.’

Andrew Yang Is Not Your Climate Friend | The Atlantic

Thursday, August 1st, 2019

‘…But the game is not lost. The planet could still follow a range of emission outcomes, including a not very bad one and a catastrophic worst-case scenario. The worst, fastest sea-level rise seems like it may kick in between two and three degrees Celsius—and extraordinary action could yet hold that off.’
